LANCE ARMSTRONG BIKEWAY PROJECT_TUNNEL 02 INSTALLATION

Jack Sanders / Myself (RGAY) managed to get the second Tunnel installed within a short timeline, but only with the help of Ben May / many thanks to Ben for the valuable contribution.//
This is the final installation of the TUNNEL elements for LAB. +/- 8hrs enabled us to turn a small overgrown patch of weeds (thanks City of Austin Rec Department/for weed eaters) to 12 new yellow steel loops.
Located on Cesar Chavez / West of Lamar Bridge.
We hope you enjoy, we are almost done, now on to the installation of the solar lights.

LANCE ARMSTRONG BIKEWAY PROJECT_TUNNEL 01 INSTALLATION

We (leah davis, robert gay, jack sanders) are excited to finally install one of the large sculptural pieces for the LAB AIPP project called the Tunnels. What a marvelous day to be in Austin and working with good friends to install these undulating ribs.

Throughout the process of fabrication we designed into the system a level of randomness, so that each tunnel piece would lean or sit in a different direction. (so it is purposeful). We also wanted to explore how the installation process could have some of that same randomness, by intuitively deciding on site what loops went where.

Tunnel 01 is in the ground. We are getting close, stayed tuned for more installation news as we finish this project this month.

THOUGHTBARN_HELLO BIRDIE_GOURD ENSEMBLE

We have jumped into the animal weekend here in Austin. We are submitting a birdhouse entry for the Uplift Austin charity event. Lucy and I used the gourd houses of the vernacular South as a launching point for our contribution.

Our Gourd Ensemble is made of 120 layers of laser cut corrugated cardboard, making a well-ventilated, camoflauged and ultimately biodegradable habitat for an extended family of purple martins. Our hope is that the birds will participate in the design and construction of the birdhouse by filling in the corrugations with twigs and pine straw. Then, as the cardboard gradually biodegrades, a second bird-designed home emerges.

We were shortlised for a project (New Cultural Center) in Arlington, Va. in June 2009.

On that visit I had the pleasure of meeting Sans Facon'. , a group from Glasgow, Scotland. (Tristen Surtees / Charles Blanc). We spent a good couple of days discussing art, architecture, and visiting the cultural community of Washington DC area.

I hope we can collaborate with these two soon. Check out their work, it is pretty great.

In late April we were commissioned by Art Alliance Austin to create entrance beacons for Art City Austin. Below are some videos from the installation process and also some finished images of each of the entrance sites, City Hall entrance / Cesar Chavez entrance.

It was a short project that we were pleased/delighted with the end product.

WE PROPOSED A NEW SCREEN / SLAT PORCH THAT WRAPPED THE EXSITING RESIDENCE THAT WAS COVERED BY A GRASS ROOF.

My good friends are creating a wonderful documentary about Samuel Mockbee and the Rural Studio entitled 'SNAKEBIT' .

THOUGHTBARN was commissioned to help with the initial graphic identity and website development.

We worked with his existing sketches and developed a stamp to produce all of the graphics. It become an interesting production of analog graphics that were converted to digital identity.
Some of the samples here of the stamp tests:

Being a native alabamian / Auburn University School of Architecture Alum / Rural Studio volunteer/observer / ... I believe it is an important influence in the education of architecture and also a much overlooked influence to the state of Alabama.

We are excited here to see this movie come to fruition, I had the opportunity of being present for some of the great times in Greensboro with these friends and colleages. We are wishing for their success.

ART CITY AUSTIN commissioned us to install temporary entrance beacons for the upcoming weekend long art festival.

"Robert Gay and Lucy Begg, of THOUGHTBARN, a local design/build firm, were commissioned by Art Alliance Austin to create entrance beacons for the Art City Austin 09.
Each entrance consists of small, operable FOIL leaves that move, react with air movement. The individual leaves are made from radiant heat barrier foil, normally used in to keep heat out of attics. The reflective foil creates a visually, playful art piece out of material usually hidden away from site.
Foil modules are all attached as to grid work of welded wire mesh suspended from tube and coupler scaffolding system. Each module is able to move with the wind and also provide a varying degree of reflection of the sun and refraction."

Recently, I was asked by the editor of TEXAS ARCHITECT to submit a proposal to re-use an abandoned Circuit City building here in Austin. It was a good quick little study into the possibilities of these horrible places in the American Landscape. I sort of went for it and included this text as well:

"Big Box Retail has failed the American Landscape and failed the American People. This developmental model depletes the land and leaves it with remnants of a broken model.
This proposal looks at how, commerce could become more localized, how it could be an integrated model of development. Using surplus shipping containers from the failed global market, we pool these resources to help instigate new models of commerce where the individual is driver and the local market becomes the driving force for economy.
It proposes to shade itself. it proposes to fuel itself from the sun. It proposes to help people start a new life, it proposes to nurture the land, it proposes community, it proposes a responsible way to reach the American Dream. "

This is a great little remodel /addition over on the east side of Austin. We worked with the couple on reworking the existing interior and adding a small bedroom addition to the rear of the house. The owners are heading up the construction and also doing some it, so kudos to them. We can't wait to see how it turns out in the end.

Thanks to Anthony at the City of Austin Signs and Markings for helping us gather some old road signs for our LAB project. We are going to use the back side of the sign for our sign plates, cutting down on the cost of aluminum.
We are currently in the research / sizing phase of the solar LED lights that will be incorporated into every sign post. more to come soon.

CO2 LED_WINS NATIONAL AIPP AWARD

Americans for the Arts/Year in Review / 'Projects of the Year 2007 Award'

CO2LED, temporary public art project, that myself (jack sanders, butch anthony) (lucy begg(fab team)) all worked on last summer in Arlington, Virginia. The project promoted the use of alternative energy sorces and responded to Arlington's environmental intitiative FreshAIRE.

We used over 600 solar powered LEDS to illuminate this underutilized traffic island in Arlington's Rozzyln neighborhood.

Jody Pinto (new york artist / judge) from the Americans for the Arts / Year in Review commented:

"it is both inventive and witty and, by using wit, it delivers an ecological message with grace and drama - and what a wonderful use of a traffic island."

Thank you for the great comments, we really enjoyed working with the Arlington's Cultural Affairs Division on this great project, wonderful group to work with.

The History of us working at the mohawk follows::

We have a long working relationship with the Mohawk a venue in Austin. Design Build Adventure/THOUGHTBARN worked on the initial language setting exercise when the venue first opened a couple of years ago. Cladding the existing building in recycled heart pine and weaving the fence with recycled pallet strap material from a local lumberyard, adding super graphics that let you know exactly where you were listening to music.

As with any successfull venture, the needs and growth of the place have changed. Throughout the years, we have continued to work with the Mohawk on various additions and furniture elements that we hope keep the place constantly evolving and allows us to work within the constraints of low cost constructs that hopefully carry with them a tremedous hit to your internal stomach area of fun.

Last October Lucy Begg and Myself entered the Cesar Chavez Memorial Competition here in Austin. We felt it was a great proposal to work on and were excited about the possibilities, but they chose to go with a statue instead.

Project Description
A statue of Cesar Chavez was recently unveiled on the UT campus. He is the first Hispanic to be remembered amongst presidents, donors and football coaches. Driving along there today you pass a mural on the side of Longs Motors. Chavez is depicted with a box of fruit and the UFW flag. Big letters spell out his popular quote - ‘Si se puede!’

Amongst these iconic statues, road name changes and murals how could another memorial contribute to the public memory of Chavez in Austin? Our proposal mobilises stories - official events of his life, anecdotes from those who knew him in Austin, details of his continuing legacy today. These would be inscribed along the length of the site outside the library. 66 L-shaped bands would form a sculptural timeline, 8ft high and 200ft long, which could be read, walked along and danced in and out of.

The memorial invites different kinds of engagement with its public, whether drivers, pedestrians, bus users or library visitors. Perhaps you drive past it each day and enjoy the momentary reflection of your car in the mirrored surfaces. One day you might step off the sidewalk and casually read some of the stories. Maybe what you learn even inspires you to check out a book about Chavez from the library.

We imagine that the timeline sculpture would be not only a collective vehicle for commemoration but also an ongoing educational resource and catalyst for actions that continue Chavez’s legacy of social justice.

I wanted to get some projects from the vault out there. THOUGHTBARN was commissioned (2007) by Gauge Knits to produce a series of photobased adds for marketing purposes for the local knit store located in Austin. Here are some of the samples that we developed for them.

We (LEAH DAVIS, ROBERT GAY, JACK SANDERS)(breifly none as 'nextproject') were commissioned a couple of years ago to produce the integrated artwork for the LANCE ARMSTRONG BIKEWAY PROJECT, in Austin. (THE PROJECT IS FUNDED BY AIPP)

After some delays with funding, we have begun the fabrication of the benches/signs and paint applications. The entire proposal can be seen here, below are some recent fabrication images, stay tuned for more information soon.

wow. last night had the privilege of hanging with some peeps at the mohawk, (which through the sound of people talking there it is coming into its own and is developing a really nice scene and regulars, cheers to those guys) there was a packed list full of nice bands. But i must admit, my favorites emerge as white denim. hot.hot.

introduced to me by their friends at a parlor show in october, they have been practicing and it shows. These guys,(steve, josh, james) are really talented and quietly emerging into a scene of their own. Watch out for them in SXSW, if you get a chance to see them expect some really well crafted original sound, with high energy. rumor has it there you might see them at the mohawk in that case, i hope to see you all there. support local good music like these guys.
