We have jumped into the animal weekend here in Austin. We are submitting a birdhouse entry for the Uplift Austin charity event. Lucy and I used the gourd houses of the vernacular South as a launching point for our contribution. Our Gourd Ensemble is made of 120 layers of laser cut corrugated cardboard, making a well-ventilated, camoflauged and ultimately biodegradable habitat for an extended family of purple martins. Our hope is that the birds will participate in the design and construction of the birdhouse by filling in the corrugations with twigs and pine straw. Then, as the cardboard gradually biodegrades, a second bird-designed home emerges.Support the cause by participating in the silent auction, hope to see you there.
